Pedagogy of the Plants

Agave, Agave americana

“The Bloody Bucket” sits behind the agave.

The man on the porch was suspicious, and asked if I was taking pictures of “a varmint.”  I commented on the agave plant, and asked if I could get a shot of the sign.  When he discovered I’m from Camden, he warmed up and gave me the condensed history of “just a lil’ neighborhood bar.”

He and the owner met in the Navy.  The building was hauled in from Kingsland around 1975 and used to be the top floor of someone’s house.  I mentioned that as a teenager, we always wondered what went on inside, and he said that it’s pretty low key until ten or eleven.
